I'll s breitling-navitimer-rid-0.html. breitling navitimer heritagetart this post by saying I am by no means a vintage Bretiling expert. I mainly know about vintage Rolex, and I'm only an intermediate at that. This edition of Let's Look will be different because sometimes you want a good looking or specific watch and aren't as concerned about it being a perfect collectable piece. I think it is worth taking a look around the market as a novice, and trying to spot things that might be right, or wrong, like most people do.

Why the Breitling Navitimer 806? I was in a vintage watch shop yesterday, tried one on and it absolutely sang to me. It has all the swagger of an old Daytona with big white subdials, and great wrist presence for a 40 year old piece. I've tried several times to love modern Breitlings, but ended up selling both of them in short order. The basic criteria I'm interested in are: Twin Jet or AOPA logo and white chrono registers on a black dial (panda). I'd like it to be in good condition with some nice patina and as original as I can get. I don't really care if its filled gold or steel.

Back in the day, you could get your Navitimer with two different logos: Twin Jets [below left] , or since these were mainly pilots instruments, you could use the AOPA (Airplane Owners and Pilots Association) logo [below right] .

As far as I can tell, both versions of these dials were fairly common and there doesn't seem to be a premium on either AOPA or Twin Jet, although common sense would dictate that AOPA is likely slight rarer due to it needing to be specially requested.

Let's Look!

1. eBay seller qaz714 , Breitling Navitimer 806, offered at $3,500

Wrist Times Breakdown:

Hands and Dial appear to be totally original to a Mark V  The serial number, 1.3MM, shows it is an early 1970's Mark V version . Maxi sub-dials which I find balance the dial better than the smaller ones. Tritium on the hands and hour makers has a brown patina and has shrunk inwards over the years. Its not definitely original, as it looks a little sloppy, but its hard to say and isn't distracting. Chronograph seconds hand is dead center on the top arrow. Be very careful of any chronograph in which this is even slightly un-centered, typically means mechanical issues. Seller provides movement shots in which the major bridges and components seem correct with the right markings. [See image gallery above] Seller claims it was recently serviced and is in excellent running order including the chronograph. Well priced as compared to other examples.

Purchase Rating: ★★★★★ ★ ☆ (6/7 Stars)

2. eBay seller eastbazaar , Breitling Navitimer 806, offered at $5,400

Quick note about online watch buys. Its very clear when a seller specializes in watches or not. Its is usually a better bet to trust a seller with pictures of the movement, with clear serial numbers and angles which make the best/rarest attributes of the watch perfectly clear. This seller has a bunch of HQ pictures, but nothing of the movement,

Wrist Times Breakdown:

Original hands and dial from what I can tell. Weirdly, like the example above, it has a serial number 1.3MM,  shows  it is an early 1970's  Mark V version . (These two were made VERY close to each other). Tritium on the hands and hour makers has a brown patina and has shrunk inwards over the years. Could have been a bad relume, but i believe this to be period correct based on most of the other's I've seen. Sharp color (orange/red) that hasn't been washed out with time in the sun. Chronograph seconds hand is dead center on the top arrow. Priced at the highest end of the range with little condition difference over less expensive models on the market.  Doesn't have many details in the description or a movement shot. Seller clearly isn't a watch dealer and may not respect the details that matter.

Purchase Rating: ★★★ ☆☆☆ ☆ (3/7 Stars)

3. Paul Duggan Fine Watches , Breitling Navitimer 806, offered at $3,200

I have heard exceptional things about Paul Duggan Fine Watches, located in Boston. They always have a great selection of vintage pieces from Rolex to Patek, Breitling to Jaeger LeCoultre and their prices are hard to beat. I first came upon them as a Chrono24 seller and quickly found out they have a whole website with inventory, its definitely worth a check a few times a month.

Wrist Times Breakdown:

Original hands and dial from what I can tell. Serial number 1.16MM,  shows  it is a 1967  Mark V version .  Tritium on the hands and hour makers has great yellow/brown patina and doesn't have the squiggly lume (relume?) as seen on the two above. Excellent. Good color still present on the dial. Chronograph seconds hand is dead center on the top arrow. Sold by a trusted business, and comes with a warranty and some extra piece of mind, hard to come by when buying vintage timepieces. Lowest priced model of all three, and from what I can tell the best condition. Doesn't have a movement shot, but as this seller is a fine watch dealer, I'm less concerned and I'd request extra pictures if I wanted to make sure of a detail.

Purchase Rating: ★★★ ★★★★  (7/7 Stars)
